resurgence
We’re addressing the elephant in the room. It’s been a month since my last post and whether you even care or not, I will bring you up to speed.
For a multitude of reasons I started this - it sparked my joy, it allowed me to fuse my passion for music with my writing and creativity and so on. I was getting into a groove of how I wanted to kid present the blog when I noticed there was so much more I wanted to do when eerrrkkk the brakes got pumped. Some personal issues came through like a bullet train to Kyoto paralyzing the continuation of the posts. I became riddled with guilt but decided to figure my shit out at home and come to you all when I was ready and not because of some timeline I BIG I created for me.
No apologies, no regrets, no shame
Concerts I went to since my last post:
Drake / Lil Wayne / Lil Durk Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise
Mariah Carey MGM Dolby Live in Las Vegas
flipturn / The Hails Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale
Drake
The show started at 8p but really it was the DJ out there setting the night up. Lil’ Durk went on at 9p - I don’t know much about him but he held his own. I recognized a song or two but I’ll give it to him, he did his thing. It’s about 9:30p when he finishes and my nephew and I are taking bets to see how long it would actually be until Drake came out. We both had our eyes set on 10p - it was about 10:15p when a younger doppelgänger of the Canadian rapper appears on the screen paying homage to Aubrey’s Degrassi days. The nostalgia was real - watching the show on “The N” as a kid to seeing him live many, many years later. There were a lot of moments like this throughout the concert - middle/high school playlist had Lil’ Tunechi and Drake on rotation.
The show was entertaining what with the large props floating around the room and the Marvin’s Room musician giving his all for us that night! There were special appearances by DJ Khaled, Sexxy Red, Drake’s mom and son - it was truly an exceptional night. My nephew was able to witness a legend, the GOAT, HIStory and I’m so glad we were able to experience it together!
Mariah Carey
Imagine a 24 hour girls trip to Las Vegas to see the one and only Mariah Carey - another legend! It’s crazy to go all the way to Vegas for one night only - in truth it was enough. Traveling all day, a fancy schmancy dinner at Giada, the event of the evening, Ms. Carey, and a night cap at the Waldorf Astoria it was barely midnight when we called it a night! The show was incredible - we were worried that there was going to be some lip-syncing but surprisingly the whistle tone singer pulled it off! She was absolutely fabulous and after all these years her voice kept up. Exquisite gowns and dress/hair changes, the dancers, and the storyline of the concert was chef’s kiss! Brava to her - the most telling of the time was the show’s promptness. It started when it was supposed to and a hard stop when it was done - it was barely 2 hours but again enough to satisfy the crowds that came to see her!
flipturn/The Hails
A Thursday night show and like a rookie I get to the venue early. There’s a line reaching the second aisle of the parking lot - I decide to eat my McDonald’s dinner in the car and wait for the line to dissipate knowing they weren’t going to be playing for a while. I finish my meal and head inside to stake out my spot for the evening.
Revolution is a two-story venue that wraps around the stage. The early birds have already claimed the floor and tables so I head upstairs and find a cool spot right above the stage. Drinking my Redbull the roar of the crowd welcomes The Hails - I only recently, and by recently I mean earlier that day at work, checked out their music. It was fun, in your face alt-rock and when it comes to new bands I really watch out for their engagement and stage presence and let’s just say, I became a fan. They were interactive and sounded incredible however I was really there for flipturn. August was their first song I had heard before I started stalking their discography - when their show was announced I knew I had to go see them and they did not disappoint!
Dillon Basse (vocals/guitar), Tristan Duncan (guitar), Madeline Jarman (bass), Mitch Fountain (Synth/Guitar) and Devon VonBalson (drums).
Starting the show with Churches and continuing with more crowd favorites like Vanilla, Sad Disco, Chicago, The Fall and of course August to name a few. Their encore was a cover of The Strokes, Reptilia - They electrified the room!
I could barely keep my eyes open at work the next day but I wouldn’t want it any other way!
I’m glad to be back and posting - I’m going to be shaking things up so it may not always be an interview or a show breakdown but you can definitely count on it being all about the music.
